What is CrypticCrab?
CrypticCrab is an app that teaches you how to solve cryptic crosswords — the kind you find in The Guardian, The Times, and other newspapers. Through guided lessons, structured practice, and a daily puzzle, you'll go from "I have no idea what these clues mean" to solving them with confidence.
How do I get started?
Download CrypticCrab from the App Store and open it up. Module 1 (Foundation) is completely free and introduces you to the core techniques step by step — no prior experience needed. Just tap the first lesson and go at your own pace.
How do subscriptions work?
CrypticCrab offers monthly and 3-month subscription options that unlock Modules 2 and beyond, plus access to the daily puzzle archive. All subscriptions are managed through Apple — we never see your payment details.
To manage or cancel your subscription, go to Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. You can cancel anytime, and you'll keep access until the end of your current billing period.
How do I restore my purchases?
If you've reinstalled the app or switched to a new device, open CrypticCrab, go to Settings (the cog icon), and tap Restore Purchases. Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, so as long as you're signed in with the same account, everything will restore automatically.
Does the app work offline?
Yes — all lessons and practice content are bundled directly into the app, so they work completely offline. The only feature that requires an internet connection is the daily puzzle, which fetches a fresh clue each day. Once it's loaded, you can solve it without a connection.
What devices are supported?
CrypticCrab runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later. It's optimised for both screen sizes and works great in both portrait and landscape.
How does the daily puzzle work?
Every day at midnight, a new cryptic clue appears in the Daily tab. Solve it to earn XP and keep your streak going. Past clues are available in the archive — you can scroll back through previous days and solve any you missed, which also earns XP. Archive access requires a subscription.
